It is one of the oldest departments of the College which offers Honours in English literature and Elective English for BA General Students. The department also facilitates the organization of Career Oriented Programme (COP) in Communicative English to cater to the direct application of the English Language in the career/job front of the students. The College is starting the PG course in English form this academic session.

This department, started in the year 2012, is the pilot department even in the University of North Bengal where the College is affiliated. The department offers both honours and elective in the subject. The department facilitates peer counseling in the campus.

BA General is a continuation of the IA programme with which the college initially got affiliated to the University of Kolkata in 1935. When the affiliation was shifted to North Bengal University in the year 1962, the two year BA general programme continued. In the Nineties, it has been replaced with the three year BA General programme as to create compatibility with other Universities and as per UGC directives. Students may opt for any three of the combinations of the Honours courses being offered or that of the non-Honours courses.
