One Billion Rising

SILIGURI,14/02/2017: With the initiative of Women Cell, Salesian college, Siliguri, a group of thirty three students along with three faculty members from Salesian College, Siliguri had participated in ‘One Billion Rising’ , a revolution against exploitation of women, a revolution to sharpen the focus and visibility on the exploitation of women and harness stronger global solidarity to demand an end to violence against women in all forms. Around seven schools and colleges and eminent guests were present for the campaign, which was held in Shivam Palace.

The Chief Guest for the event was Commandant Mr.Tapan Das and Sr. Anita Maria Braganza (Provincial Head, Loreto). The panellists included - DCP Indra Chakravorty, Dr. Nirmal Kumar Bera, Ms. Susama Nayak (Principal of Goodricke School for Special Children), Advocate Mrs. Sushmita Bose, Professor John.B.Tirkey, Associate Professor Sutapa Saha And Principal Smt. Uma Majhi.

The programme began with an introductory video and a mesmerizing song presented by specially gifted children from Prerna Education Centre. After the song there was a dance performance by ‘Gsquad’ choreographed by Mr.Jiten Ghymirey on child labour. The highlight of the day was the panel discussion where various issues like laws in India that can safeguard women, emotional and psychological well being of women, cyber crime, sexual harassment and concept of increasing nuclear families.were discussed. Ms.Hasina Kharbhih Founder of Impulse NGO Network, also a motivational speaker was the moderator for the panel discussion. The interactive session enabled the audience members to put their views, opinions and queries. This was followed by the acknowledgement of the women leaders in and around Siliguri who had made their contributions to women.

The programme came to an end with a song presented by Eric Singh from Salesian College Siliguri supporting the campaign and also a dance by Devolution Crew representing the same college. The programme concluded with prize and memento distribution.
